Ball bearing helps to reduce the friction between the rotating shafts or objects of an application which ranges from the medical equipment to the turbines. They are also called as rolling bearing elements. The basic structure of the bearing has an inner race which carries the shaft, the rings of balls which are placed by the cage to keep them properly spaced and an outer space where your application fix with the shaft from rest of the mechanism. Roller bearings also have the same principle only they use cylinders instead of balls to carry the heavy loads.
Bicycles are the perfect example of a ball bearing application which is used for the low speeds and low loads. Bearings carry wheels on the axle spindles, crack on the frame and the pedals on the crack. Older versions of the bicycles do not have a crate or cage to positioning the balls. They move in a cup and held in a particular place by the cone. The space of the ball bearings are filled with the grease and the removal between the cone and cup is adjustable. Thus it is not so loose to play or not enough tight to bind the bearing while the new version is made with the sealed cartridges.
High-speed bearings put the weight or stress on the bearings in many several ways. For the high speeds, the rotational speed is not only the factor to consider, bearing designs also examined the bore diameter. Such bearings used in the applications such as turbochargers in aerospace and automotive designs, dental and medical equipment, and high-speed tooling equipment. Such applications usually use ceramic precision balls rather than using steel balls due to the low weight, great smoothness, and long bearing life.
Axial and moment load applications
Axial loads pull and push on the rotating shaft whereas moment loads twist the bearing. Taking an example of a swivel caster which has wheel and swivel bearing. The wheel supports or takes the radial load on the axis while swivel takes the thrust load which is perpendicular to bearing. Another example you can take of vehicle wheels.
Linear roller bearings are work as same as the ball and roller bearings till they are carrying loads in the straight line. Applications which include such bearing are moving industrial equipment and train monorails.
Here we covered the topic of a ball bearing and the different applications in which different ball bearing is used. This will help you to understand the importance of the ball bearing.
